“A complex, fast-paced ride. Ella is compelling as a highly skilled officer dealing with modern versus traditionalist issues on the reservation.”
—RT Book Reviews on Earthway
Navajo Police Special Investigator Ella Clah is stunned when her former colleague, Harry Ute, is murdered during an investigation. Harry was an excellent officer and a good friend, and Ella and her team are determined to find his killer. The dead man was found in an isolated part of the reservation—an area reportedly haunted by skinwalkers. The locals are too frightened of the Navajo witches to tell the police much.
Harry had been working for Bruce “Teeny” Little, a local security expert, looking into the theft of government property—but what property, and who the suspects are, Teeny won’t say. Is it possible that Ella herself is under suspicion? She’s clean, but she knows the power rumors can have in a tight-knit community like the Rez.
County cop Dan Nez is also looking into the government thefts. The two detectives—each top dog in their own territory—pursue a joint investigation that is complicated by their growing attraction to each other. Evidence connects Harry’s murder to the secret sale of previously unknown Navajo artifacts. If Harry discovered a hidden—and illegal—dig, the artifact smugglers might have killed him to protect their lucrative operation.
Identifying the murderer isn’t going to be easy. But Ella won’t rest until the killer is found. Harry was one of her own, and like all victims, deserves justice,
