SUMMARY:Winter Lecture: Dr. Julie Zimmermann\, "Storytelling in the Creatio
 n of Cahokia" ZOOM lecture
DESCRIPTION:The first installment of this year’s Winter Lecture series is
by Dr. Julie Zimmermann. This lecture will take place January 16 at 2 pm
on-line. Dr. Zimmermann discusses Cahokia as a state focused on storytelli
ng. The abstract of Dr. Zimmermann’s lecture\, “Storytelling in the Cr
 eation of Cahokia\,” follows.\n\nDr. Zimmermann states\, “I have argue
d that Cahokia might best be understood as the capital of a Native America
n theater state\, which drew people to it and spread its influence by attr
acting followers through theatrical rituals. In current research I argue t
hat storytelling was primary among those rituals. All humans define and cr
eate the perceived world through language and stories\, and storytelling i
s a central ritual in oral societies\, the foundation for all other ritual
 s. Traditional Native American beliefs indicate that words form the world\
; contemporary Native American viewpoints also suggest that stories are es
sential and create the world. Cahokian stories were remembered and commemo
rated with Braden-style artworks made at and disseminated from Cahokia. Pr
imary among these stories was that of a great hero who wore human head ear
rings. Other stories were told at Cahokia\, but the stories of heroes are
those most often depicted in Braden-style artworks found far from Cahokia.
The dissemination of hero stories supports the notion that Cahokia was a
state\; heroic storytelling was central to the growth of the state. Cahoki
ans created their world through stories\, but it was through hero stories
that they grew their authority in far-flung societies.”\n\nThis is the l
ink you will distribute to allow participants to register for the webinar.
Once registration is completed\, each attendee will receive a confirmat
ion email with their own unique join link.\n\nhttps://siue.zoom.us/webinar

\, though make sure any refuse makes its way back to our trash cans at the
Interpretive Center. It is imperative that no one climb the mounds\, as u
nauthorized foot trails on the sides of mounds are causing severe erosion
problems on these ancient monuments.\n\nThe event is expected to take from
9-12:30. Please meet by the Monks Mound information sign.

DESCRIPTION:"Cahokia in Chesterfield: The Sun\, Moon and Milky Way" is the
title of the free presentation by Mark Leach\, September 15\, at 6 pm\, at
the Collinsville Memorial Library\, at the monthly meeting of the Cahokia
Archaeological Society. The public is invited to attend.\n\nNearly 1000 y
ears ago\, a vibrant community\, related to the great prehistoric city of
Cahokia\, filled the entire Chesterfield Valley west of St. Louis. This pl
anned civic\, ceremonial\, and market center was constructed to reflect im
portant celestial alignments of the sun\, moon\, and Milky Way. Excavation
s and other research in a portion of the valley have revealed over 100\,00
0 artifacts\, including some made from exotic material from the Gulf of Me
xico and the Great Lakes\, as well as three temples and two earthen pyrami
ds that formed a solar calendar that stretched over 3.5 miles across the v
alley. Leach will discuss these findings and others from over 70 years of
archaeological research\, which still is ongoing. Leach\, a local author\,
has published several archaeological books\, including one with the same
title as his presentation\, and Chesterfield's Ancient Past\, and The Grea
t Pyramids of St. Louis: An Ancient Metropolis.

SUMMARY:Cahokia Archaeological Society Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At the November 17 meeting of the Cahokia Archaeological Societ
y\, Steve Boles\, Senior Research Archaeologist for the Illinois State Arc
haeological Survey\, will give a talk entitled "Grandmother—Up in Smoke:
Traces of Cahokians in Distant Lands." The abstract of the lecture can be
found below.\n\nDecades of research on the birth of the Mississippian cul
ture and the founding of Cahokia has shown that at the onset\, Cahokia dre
 w immigrants from all directions. It was\, in essence\, the Pre-Contact "m
elting pot" of its time. We also know that people began departing Cahokia
roughly a hundred years after it began. Although the complete depopulation
of Cahokia would take another two hundred years\, a substantial depopulat
ion of Cahokia is evident by the 12th century. Where did they go? Although
a number of researchers are focusing on that question\, the answer is qui
te elusive. How does one "track" Cahokian emigrants? Of all the Cahokia tr
appings\, very few would be distinguishable in the archaeological record.
At the top of the list\, however\, would be the Cahokia-style figurines or
statues\, many created as or converted to pipes. A rather obscure female
effigy pipe carved in the Cahokia-style and recovered in Oklahoma will be
the focus of this presentation. This effigy is likely a depiction of a myt
hological persona often referred to as Grandmother or Old Woman. Other not
able figurines and identifiable Cahokian material recovered in distant lan
 ds will also be discussed
